About Caldwell Academy
MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of Caldwell Academy is to assist parents from a Biblical perspective in the instruction of their child by providing a classical and Christian education.
Caldwell Academy is a kindergarten through twelfth grade classical, Christian school located in the beautiful city of Greensboro, North Carolina. Caldwell believes that God has given the primary responsibility of education to parents and seeks to assist parents in this endeavor by providing a Christ-centered, classical education. We hope that you will find our website to be informative and helpful as you prayerfully consider educational options for your children. More importantly, however, we hope that you will begin to see and understand our passion to equip our students to be Christian thinkers in a fallen world.
Based on the centuries old model of education called the Trivium, Caldwell’s goal is to teach students the proper use of the tools of learning. By mastering the tools of learning, Caldwell students will be equipped for life as thinkers and learners. The Trivium divides the school career into three stages according to the way children naturally develop. The three stages are grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric.
GRAMMAR (KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE)
Students begin by learning the fundamental facts and rules of each subject. Teaching methods such as singing, memorizing, chanting, and recitation are emphasized. Latin instruction begins in third grade.
DIALECTIC (SIXTH THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE)
Students are taught how to analyze, reason, question, evaluate, and critique. Logic, the art of arguing correctly, is taught as a core subject. In addition, students learn to think about all of life within the framework of a Biblical worldview.
RHETORIC (NINTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE)
In the study of rhetoric, students learn how to express what they know and what they are learning. Debate, apologetics, speech, essay writing, and drama are emphasized during this stage as a means to equip students as effective communicators. Students are challenged and trained to implement a Biblical worldview by engaging the culture for Christ. The rhetoric stage is built on a foundation of accumulated knowledge and is the capstone of the Trivium.
CALDWELL GRADUATE PROFILE
Recognizing that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, Caldwell Academy desires to graduate young men and women who understand the need to live one’s life under the authority of the canopy of Scripture and who do so with eagerness in joyful submission to God. We expect graduates to be skillful in using the tools of learning: to think critically, listen carefully with discernment and understanding, reason persuasively, and articulate precisely. We intend for our graduates to be exposed to the Classical virtues of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty in order to demonstrate those through the Spiritual virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love. We endeavor for our graduates to be socially graceful and spiritually gracious, desiring to grow in understanding while fully realizing the limitations and foolishness of the wisdom of this world. We strive to produce graduates who will not conform to the pattern of this world, but are being transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ: serving sacrificially, having a heart for the lost, and boldly bringing the message of Christ’s salvation to a broken world. Ultimately, our desire is that all Caldwell graduates, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, will do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God.
