David Caldwell Biography

Caldwell Academy is proudly named for David Caldwell, Guilford County’s outstanding Revolutionary War Era minister, educator, farmer, statesman, physician, and devoted family man. His was a life well lived; a life worthy of introducing to our students. Born in Pennsylvania in 1725, he came to this region to serve as pastor of both Buffalo and Alamance Presbyterian Churches.

Among his many achievements, Dr. Caldwell started the David Caldwell Log College, the first school-house located in Guilford County. The Log College was a classical school where many future ministers, governors, statesmen, doctors, educators, and lawyers received their foundational education.

Dr. Caldwell was known for his habitually cheerful disposition as he tirelessly devoted his life to the temporal and spiritual well being of this region of North Carolina. He loved God and he loved his fellow man. In short, David Caldwell gave witness to the reality that our chief purpose in life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
